Zip for Macintosh

Other Download Resources

Executables
There are two versions available. Both versions can create and extract non crypt archives.
  • MacZip only with decryption code: This version can extract crypt zip archives but can not create crypt archives.
  • MacZip with full crypt code:This version can do both extract and create crypt zip archives.
The encryption code was originally written in Europe and can be freely distributed from any country except the U.S.A. If this code is imported into the US, it cannot be re-exported from the US to another country. (This restriction might seem curious but this is what US law requires.) However, Phil Katz has said that he got an export license for his algorithm, so this hassle of separate distribution may cease one day.

    However
I think this encryption code is rather weak.
There are some cracking programs available. (see Technical Report of Paul C. Kocher and Eli Biham "A Known Plaintext Attack on the PKZIP Stream Cipher"

These packages contains the executable and Docs only. It's compiled as a FAT binary
so it can run a 68K machine also.

Sources

This packages contains the sources only ! You will also need to download the
executables to extract all the stuff
All these packages are compressed with MacZip !

The Library Libmoto (available at: http://www.mot.com/SPS/PowerPC/library/fact_sheet/libmoto_download.html)
is a optimized library by Motorola and is optional.
All project are made with Metrowerks Codewarrior Pro 5

However it should be possible to build your own project. Just put the all standard libraries at the end.

Test-Zipfiles

I have compiled some Test-Zipfiles for testing. It contains only two files to show the Zip-Format.

Zip-Programs / Macintosh Extra-Data:
-----------------------------------------
A brief overview:
Currently, as far as I know, there are 4 Zip-Programs available.
These programs builds (of cause) different variants of Zip-Files:

       MacZip10_JLEE.zip
    - Info-Zip's first Port of Zip. Ported by Johnny Lee
This Port is rather outdated and no longer supported (since 1992).
68K only. Only minimal Mac-info is stored (Creator/Type,
      Finderattributes).
Until now, Only Unzip 5.32 survived.

       zipit138.zip
    - ZipIt by Tom Brown. This is a Shareware and still supported I think.
ZipIt has a nice GUI, but I found it can't handle large Zipfiles
quite well. ZipIt compresses Macintosh files using the MacBinary
format. So, transfering files to other platforms is not so easy.
Only minimal Mac-info is stored (Creator/Type, Finderattributes).
Macfilenames are changed to a most compatible filename.

       PKZip_Mac23.zip / PKZip_Mac210d.zip
    - PKZIP/mac v2.03/210d. This is a Shareware.
I'm not sure about their support: I found only a version on ASI's
      website (http://www.asizip.com/products/products.htm). It's the
      version PKZIP/mac 210d, But it's rather outdated (1995).
Only minimal Mac-info is stored (Creator/Type, Finderattributes).
The Zipfile format looks like incompatible to other
platforms. Macfilenames are restored without any change.

       SmartZip_10.zip
    - SmartZip 1.0. This is a Shareware by Marco Bambini.
SmartZip has also a nice GUI (better than ZipIt).
      Unfortunately:
Like ZipIt, SmartZip compresses Macintosh files using the
      MacBinary format.
So, transfering files to other platforms is not so easy.
This ZipFormat is very new. I have no further information about
      that format.

and finally:
       MacZip10_new.zip
    - Info-Zip's latest Port of Zip. MacZip 1.0. Ported by me :-)
It's supported (of cause) and up to date. Fullset of macintosh
info is stored: Creator/Type, Finderattributes, Findercomments,
      MacOS 8.0 Foldersettings, Icon/Folder-Positions ...
Macfilenames are restored without any change.
